Aerial Forest Firefighting

The primary role of Forest Protection’s impressive fleet is to provide quick initial response to wildfires.

The aircraft strategy is designed to support ground crew by slowing, if not stopping, the spread of fire so ground crew can contain then extinguish the fire. We provide a foundational service that is responsible for protecting not only New Brunswick’s forests and communities, but also other jurisdictions and neighbouring provinces that require essential forest firefighting.

Forest Protection Limited is a ground-based operation with 11 reload bases strategically located throughout New Brunswick, equipped with fire retardant, foam, and water. These reload bases allow aircraft to reattack the fire in the most expeditious manner possible. During the forest fire season, we split our firefighting aircraft into two teams, based at the Fredericton Airport (CYFC). Depending on the fire hazard, aircraft may be moved or “day based” to other reload bases province-wide for quick response. This asset allocation provides rapid response to forest fires with our objective to have an aircraft over a fire almost immediately following dispatch.

Our state-of-the-art Air Tractor AT-802s can be used to contain spot fires, cool hot spots, and create retardant fire breaks in areas where it may be difficult or unsafe to have people and heavy equipment working.

FPL’s firefighting services are essential to protecting the life, property, and forests of New Brunswick. Furthermore, such fire protection contributes to mitigating climate change and championing strong and healthy forests in our province.
